LETTER: For the love of flying

Despite all the nasty things said about South African airways they are by far the most efficient and on time carrier.

EDITOR – I fly regularly with overseas tour groups to destinations around Southern Africa.

Last year on five of my flights, there were delays of between one to three hours. These were all British airways out of Johannesburg to Cape Town and Johannesburg to Victoria Falls. Each time it was a technical delay or we are waiting for your aircraft to come in from Windhoek. On one occasion the story was the crew had arrived late for duty.

I was not paying for the flight so had no choice of using alternative airline, the bookings being made by my contract operator. This year in February we had a long day travelling by bus from Hoedspruit to OR Tambo for a flight from there to Cape Town with British airways at 7.30pm. Again the flight was delayed as they were short of aircraft. We eventually landed in Cape Town after 11pm. By the time we received our luggage, boarded the bus and checked into our hotel it was 1am.

The programme for our group commenced by departing from our hotel at 8am. After a full day sightseeing and having to take the clients to a restaurant for dinner I was accused of being inefficient and lethargic. Consequently I was rejected from further contracts by the operator. A loss in earnings to me of many thousands of Rands.

With my own money I would never buy a ticket for a British airways flight anywhere. Despite all the nasty things said about South African airways they are by far the most efficient and on time carrier.

BRUCE MUNRO.
