A Malawi man (44) is in a critical condition after losing his hand in a freak accident while cutting wood on Tuesday, 23 July in Amanzimtoti.

Paramedics worked quickly to stabilise the man, who was apparently making a dog kennel, before transporting him to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital for further care.

Midlands EMS paramedics reported that they were stopped by the local SAPS who had received a call about the incident, and directed the ambulance crew to the scene.

“Once arriving on the scene, paramedics found the patient seated at the back of the house with a towel wrapped around his right arm. The paramedics placed a tourniquet around the arm before they removed the towel to see the injury. The hand was completed severed. Paramedics cover the wound and kept pressure to avoid anymore blood loss,” shared the MS service’s Facebook page.

“The owner of the house had placed the hand into a container with ice before emergency personnel arrived on the scene. The patient was rushed to a nearby hospital for further medical care.”

It is believed the patient was cutting wood with a electric saw to make a dog kennel when the incident occurred. It is unclear what went wrong, however SAPS were on scene and would investigate the incident further.
