Help Illovo exchange student jet off to Switzerland

Olwethu, who lives in Illovo Township, appeals to the Amanzimtoti community to assist her in raising money for the expedition.

SWITZERLAND-BOUND Olwethu Nzuza, 16, looks forward to travelling abroad on an exchange tour where she’ll experience the Swiss culture first hand.

Olwethu, who lives in Illovo Township, appeals to the Amanzimtoti community to assist her in raising money for the expedition.

The grade 11 learner explained that a teacher at her school, Strelitzia Secondary School, told her about the exchange programme, and suggested she make contact with those planning the tour.

“There are 10 learners from my school that will be on the programme, and we’ll exchange with 10 learners from Switzerland,” she said. “My family will host one of the 10 in September. I plan to show the exchange learner uShaka Marine World, the Durban station and our local beaches, among other places. I want to give this person a true African experience.”

Olwethu will then travel to Switzerland in March 2020 to stay with the same person’s family, attend a local school for the week and have her taste of the foreign country and culture.

“I’m pretty anti-social, enjoy reading books and staying at home. Subjects at school that I enjoy most include physical science, life science and geography,” she said, describing herself. Olwethu has her sights set on becoming either a marine biologist or a pharmacists when her school career is completed.

Strelitzia Secondary School’s Olwethu Nzuza (16) looks forward to experiencing Switzerland for a week when she travels there on an exchange programme.

While Olwethu was accepted into the programme, she will need to raise R10 000 by December this year, to be able to book flights and confirm her spot on the exchange programme.

“My dad died six years ago. My mom, who is a single mother, is so proud and excited for me. She has been there for me all along the way,” she said.

To assist Olwethu with this educational experience, contact her mom, Xoli, on 083-316-1089, her uncle on 078-321-1238 or her on 081-329-1324. Obtain a sponsorship form from them and fill in the details and amount you are willing to donate.

“I can’t wait to experience the school environment and see how they teach and do things. Apparently they dress according to a colour-coordinated code from week to week. It’s going to be really cold because it’ll be winter, but I know it’s going to be a lot of fun and I’m going to learn so much,” she said.
