Kick off your old takkies, shoes, sandals, boots, slops, slippers and socks and donate it to welfare. Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare Society is in desperate need of all sizes of footwear, including shoes  for children, especially since the colder months of the year are here.

The welfare is also in need of plastic packets for packing groceries. Donations can be dropped off at the welfare offices next to Kingsburgh library. Alternatively, call 031-916-2274 between 8am and noon.

During the school holidays Kingsburgh Welfare took 35 children to Vumbuka Nature Reserve in Umbogintwini for its annual holiday programme and great fun was had by all. “We thank AECI for sponsoring the programme, Singh’s Tour for providing the bus free of charge to transport the children, and Umbogintwini Scouts for their fun programme that taught the children vital survival skills,” said senior social worker, Sandra Govender.

The children board the bus to Vumbuka Nature Reserve in Umbogintwini.

With the firm belief that every little person should be treated with dignity and respect, the focus was on the little ones during Child Protection Week last month. “Our child protection programme this year focused on allowing children to be children, as there is so much pressure on them today. We liaised with other stakeholders to highlight the importance of nurturing and caring for children that will meet their physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs,” said Sandra.

The theme for this year’s Child Protection Week was ‘Let us protect all children to move South Africa forward’. “We encourage a change in mindsets as parents, caregivers and the community to allow children to be children. Sometimes we are so focused on the future that we deny our children a present. Children should be encouraged to develop an imagination and there is no better way than through games and play.”

With this in mind, it was time for a road trip to visit the children at Indwe Learning Centre in Lower Illovo on 31 May where they were encouraged with play and games.” The welfare also thanked the fire department for their involvement and for their wonderful interaction with the children.
