Businesses unite for 12 Day Corporate Drive for Sam

Through the ‘12 Day Corporate Drive for Sam’ an amount of R80 000 was raised.

Even with yet another chemotherapy session looming, Sam Mzobe’ s smile is as infectious as ever. Helping him smile bright was the welcoming news that a ‘12 Day Corporate Drive for Sam’ raised R80 000 from local businesses.

Steel Land in Jacobs took the challenge to heart and donated R10 000 towards Sam’s medical costs. “My dad Ravi has just gone through something similar,” said Steel Land’s Larushin Pillay. “He was diagnosed with colon cancer in July and in February we got the news he was cancer-free. We understand the hardship of going through this and it’s tough if you don’t have the funds. Sam is still a young man, with so much more to live for and it’s good to help others.”

Sam was due to have another session of chemotherapy last week at Albert Luthuli, but his white blood cell count was dangerously low at zero (it should be five), so he was kept in isolation until it improved. He will book in for his chemo this week.

“I was blown away by the amount raised through the corporate challenge. I wasn’t expecting so much. It is really great that people contributed so much. Thank you to Joanne and Jonothan for all the organising and planning, Alister for starting the drive and allowing me to make my own burger at Circus Cafe, the SUN for telling my story, Steel Land and all the other companies who came on board with the drive and all the people who have ordered my burger.”

Sam was invited to design his own burger which will feature on Circus Cafe’s menu until the end of June and for every one ordered, Alister will donate 50 percent of the turnover to his medical fund. To date, 114 burgers have been ordered which amounts to a whopping R10 830.

To make a donation towards Sam’s treatment, use the following bank details until his trust is set up: Capitec Bank, VL Jensen (administrator), account number: 1624541699, branch code: 470010. Use your cellphone number as a reference, so the family can acknowledge receipt and thank donors. To stay updated on Sam’s progress, follow the Facebook page ‘Go white for Sam’.
