Temporary Rockview Road forms part of municipal repair plan

The temporary road has been funded by the contractors Leomat and not the Rockview Service Station.

The temporary road linking Kingsway and Rockview Road at the washaway site will only be opened once the letter of award (LOA) has been signed by eThekwini Municipality. The establishment of the temporary road is part of the municipal repair plan, which has been funded by the contractors Leomat and not the Rockview Service Station as previously reported. The SUN apologises for the error.

“The road surface is correct and 65mm of ashphalt was laid down on Monday, 10 June,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge, who was instrumental in pushing for the go-ahead to alleviate traffic congestion along the detour roads and the negative impact to Rockview businesses.

Signage was done yesterday (Tuesday). “Road markings, stop signs and barriers will be erected on Saturday. When the road is opened, we ask motorists to exercise caution and reduce speed to 20kph, as there is a sharp bend and it is a temporary road, although it was done to the best of our ability.”

The road can only be opened to the public once the LOA is issued because of the risk involved and public liability. “On Tuesday I conveyed to the city manager that it is crucial and they have promised to expedite it as soon as possible. We ask motorists to refrain from cutting across the public open space after it is opened.”

The remaining residence at number 45 has been totally demolished and removed from the site. Number 47, although all authorisation has been received, will only be demolished in the next week or so, as its base is currently lending stability to the embankment. “Once they are ready from the bottom, then it will be removed. Residents are reminded that the area still remains a construction site and no-one is permitted on site.

“The progress of the repair is up to expectations, even a little ahead, so it all looks good,” said Beetge.
