Toti SPCA’s five most important dog-theft prevention tips

Hundreds of dogs are stolen every year and taken to live terrible lives elsewhere. Heed these tips in an effort to prevent your dogs from being stolen.

With pet theft on a shocking increase, Amanzimtoti SPCA’s manager Tracey Girling recommended pet owner’s heed the following tips:

Sterilise your pets: Dog fighters don’t use sterilised males for fighting, and both males and females will be useless for breeding.
Microchip your pets: If a dog is found or confiscated by the SPCA, it will immediately be scanned for a microchip. If microchipped, the owner will be contacted immediately and the person who had the animal loses all ‘ownership’ of it.
Report dog-fighting and theft: The only way to combat both these awful things is to have it reported so that the SPCA can ensure they cease to continue.
Keep your animals away from the gate where they can be seen from the road and possibly grabbed by those walking past.
