Local cyclists dominate the 26th edition Sappi Karkloof Classic

It celebrated its 26th edition on Sunday, 2 June, and was an absolute blast from start to finish.

The Sappi Karkloof Classic is the fifth event in the 2019 Quattro ROAG Series and is one of the most established mountain bike (MTB) events in South Africa.

It celebrated its 26th edition on Sunday, 2 June, and was an absolute blast from start to finish. Due to the efforts of a full-time dedicated trail-building manager and team, the world-class 60km, 40km and 20km events continually get changed so repeat participants don’t get bored. All trails are super technical with rocks, forests, single track, ramps and jumps keeping riders on their toes at all times. The weather started out extremely ‘fresh’, but soon warmed up which allowed for some super finishing times.

Amanzimtoti Cycling Club had a few members competing in the 40km event, namely Malcolm Evans who finished in a time of 2:50:01 in the grand master category; Clinton Evangelides in 3:06:11; Shaun Heinze in 3:13:39; Stephan van Niekerk in 3:13:39 and Garreth Keet in 3:46:34. Gavin Grix enjoyed himself so much, he rode an extra 10km, finishing the 40km event in a time of 4:21:33.

Hendrik Bester and Neil Geustyn tackled the monstrous 60km route and managed to finish in a time of 3:29:05 and 5:04:23 respectively.
