Umbogintwini pensioner appeals for help after storm, robbery

After the storm, thieves broke into Zabanguli Gumede's house and stole the little she had in her possession.

An Umbogintwini pensioner needs the public’s help to rebuild her house after it was flooded during last month’s storm. Zabanguli Gumede, 61, lost her house when it washed away during the October 2017 storm. She rebuilt the one-bedroom shack she is currently living in, but it has been a challenge for her.

“My house is not very strong, so when it rains or is very windy it is bad. Last month’s heavy rain was so bad I was forced to leave my house and go and stay with a friend.” After moping up, Zabanguli, who was born and lived all her life in Umbogintwini, thought the worst was over, but last week her house was burgled and thieves stole what little she had.

She has no children or family to support her and her meagre state pension is not enough to survive on. She would appreciate any building material the Toti public can donate, so she can renovate her shack. “It would be nice to live in healthier conditions, as the damp is affecting my health,” she said.

Zabanguli also needs whatever appliances can be donated to replace what was stolen, bedding, clothes and food.
If you can help her, call Maxwell Zindela of the Siyakha Learning Academy on 063-896-7540 and he can arrange transport.
