UPDATE: Suspect arrested and released for Toti shooting

A description of the suspects was circulated and this led to the arrest of one of the suspects.

A suspect, allegedly involved in the shooting of a 70-year-old Amanzimtoti man during an attempted hijacking on Friday afternoon, 10 May in Beach Road, was apprehended by response officers, but released by police due to the lack of evidence.

The elderly man, whose identity was requested to be withheld by his family, survived a bullet to the head and is stable after undergoing surgery in Umhlanga Hospital on Monday.

Quick action by Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) and Blue Security officers following the attempted hijacking led to the arrest of the suspect who was later tracked down in Umdoni Road. Blue Security community and media liaison, officer Andreas Mathios said a description of the suspects was circulated to Amanzimtoti security networks, which led to the arrest of one of the alleged suspects.

“A suspect, who fitted the description of one of the alleged hijackers, was spotted in Umdoni Road where CCPO and Blue Security officers managed to apprehend him. He was handed over to Amanzimtoti SAPS at the scene for questioning. He was taken to the police station where he was fingerprinted and then released due to a lack of evidence at this stage,” he said.
