Beat depression with these foods

Dark chocolate, avocados, spinach (among others) - who knew that they actually hold the secret to feeling good?

‘Mental’ and ‘physical’ health are too often spoken of as separate aspects. However, when exploring the facts, the line dividing them becomes increasingly blurry.

In David Wolfe’s article, he explained the major role that what you put into your body (food) has on your mind.

David Wolfe recommended these nine great foods and drinks that all depression sufferers should get more of:

1. Green Tea

Research shows that polyphenols in green tea boosts the brain’s supply of dopamine, a ‘happy’ neurotransmitter. Those handy polyphenols also increase insulin sensitivity. This maintains a steady supply of glucose, which fuels the brain.

2. Almonds

Almonds contain great amounts of magnesium, which works wonders for treating depression and equally despised, the migraine.

Way back in 1968, a study found that replenishing magnesium levels (which are typically low in Americans) reverses depression, migraines and irritability.

3. Salmon

The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon lifts heavy depression. Those omega-3s soften cell membranes and make it easier for serotonin, another happy neurotransmitter, to make its way through the brain.

4. Avocados

Avocados contain great amounts of potassium and omega-3 fatty acids. A high potassium diet is known to relieve symptoms of depression and stress.

5. Chocolate

Your usual chocolate isn’t going to cut it. For depression fighting powers, you need to switch to dark chocolate.

The cocoa in dark chocolate boosts your brain’s levels of serotonin and dopamine. It also reduces your level of cortisol – the ‘stress’ neurotransmitter.

6. Bananas

Containing tryptophan, a nutrient required to create positive neurotransmitters like serotonin and melatonin, bananas work wonders! They also contain magnesium and potassium.

7. Blueberries

When down with the blues, ironically its more blue that you need in your system! Blueberries have antioxidant properties, meaning they reduce oxidative stress, a prime feature of depression.

Blueberries also help your brain grow new cells, which in itself is believed to treat depression.

8. Spinach

Of all the dark leafy greens, spinach contains the most folic acid. Folic acid deficiency tends to be common among those with depression. This acid also boosts your brain’s level of serotonin and dopamine.

It’s often used to boost antidepressant effectiveness. Spinach is also high in magnesium.

9. Asparagus

Another food high in folic acid is asparagus. This vegetable is also rich in B vitamins, which boost mental health by helping your body’s tryptophan conversion.

Tryptophan is the compound your body converts into serotonin.
