Toti hero warned residents about Rockview Road collapse

Peaceland estimates the collapse took about two hours.

Toti has a new hero in Peaceland Mthembu, a petrol attendant who was the first to warn everyone about the imminent collapse and washaway of Rockview Road during last month’s deluge.

Peaceland, who is from KwaMakhutha, was on night duty at the Rockview Service Station and decided to go and investigate why the water pooled in the road every time it rained heavily.

“When I walked down the road to go and see at about 6am or 7am, I saw the water was being pushed into the properties. I alerted a Metro Police officer who was parked nearby and I told him to come and have a look, as I felt something was wrong.

“I was looking at the cars and I saw the Hyundai SUV bucking, so I ran back to the garage to tell my boss to warn everyone, and then ran to the houses and screamed for everyone to get out.

“I could see the ground breaking up and the garage at number 45 was first to go, along with a car, then the side of the house went. The last part to break off was the northern part with part of number 47.”

Peaceland estimates the collapse took about two hours. “It was unbelievable. I’ve never seen anything like it, except in the movies. I was very scared.”
