Support paddle-out in honour of Toti spearfisherman

The aim of the gathering is to fill the ocean with as many flowers as possible, so that Bryce will know just how much he was loved.

A paddle-out for Amanzimtoti spearfisherman Bryce Buis, who drowned while fishing off the coast at St Lucia at the weekend, will be held at Baggies Beach on Wednesday, 1 May. The family has requested that friends bring flowers to the wake which starts at 10am.

Col Thulani Zwane of the SAPS KZN media centre said Bryce was diving on Saturday, 27 April when he experienced difficulties and drowned. His younger sister Teniele said Bryce would have celebrated his 37th birthday on Wednesday.

He was born in Toti and matriculated at Kingsway in 1999. He moved to Pietermaritzburg to do his first year of agricultural engineering at the University of KZN. He then moved to Durban during his next phase of studying and then back to Pietermaritzburg to graduate. He was employed at the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at the time of his death.

“Bryce always loved diving. At school he was on the waterpolo team and he was a member of the Amanzimtoti Lifesaving Club,” said Teniele. “He started kayaking with lifesaving, which led to him becoming a member of the Toti Canoe Club and completing a number of Fish River and Dusi marathons. He took up diving while still at Kingsway and it was a lifelong passion of his.”

Bryce is survived by his two young children – a boy of eight and a girl of six. “My brother was an incredible father. His children meant everything to him – they were number one. He was a caring person, very supportive, fun-loving and always up for fun. We loved him beyond belief.”

On a social media site, the family posted: “It will be Bryce’s birthday on Wednesday, 1 May and as he had such a great love for the ocean, his family has asked that all his friends meet at Baggies Beach at 10am and to bring flowers. The aim is to fill the ocean with as many flowers as possible, so that Bryce will know just how much he was loved. To those of you with surfboards, paddle boards and paddle skis, please bring them with you so that we can get the flowers as far out as possible. There is also the option to cast them off the rocks.”
