Dian to tee off in San Diego

To help Dian’s parents with costs, Selborne Golf Estate hosts a fundraising golf day on Friday, 3 May.

Kuswag Skool grade 8 learner, Dian Wilmot, has qualified to play in the IMG Junior Golf World Championships and the FCG Callaway World Championships in the USA.

Dian started playing golf when he was nine-years-old. “I bought him a junior set of golf clubs for Christmas and since then he was hooked on golf,” said his father, Karel. His golfing heroes are Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods, and he just loves their passion for the game.

Dian receives coaching lessons from David Graham once or twice a week at Amanzimtoti Golf Club, and has been his mentor from the beginning. He is a member of Selborne Golf Club and plays of a 5,2 handicap off the men’s white tees. He showed his mettle against the ‘big boys’ when he finished fourth in the A division club championships at Selborne last week. Dian plays in most of the SA junior tournaments in KZN and is currently number one in the boys 13 to 14-years. Last year the youngster won the order of merit for boys 11 to 12-years in KZN.

The young man is a prolific sportsman and also plays rugby and cricket for his school, and played rugby for KZN in the Bokkie Week in Vereeniging last September. Last year he was head boy at Kuswag Primary and captain of the cricket team and vice-captain of the rugby team. He has been playing for the Kuswag High School first golf team since Grade 5. This is Dian’s fourth year in the first team and he was also made captain.

“Since I finished third in the SA boys 13 to 14-years and qualified for the World Championships, my passion for the game went up another five steps. I am practicing more and my golf is improving by the day. I am so excited to play in the champs,” said Dian. “We fly out on 4 July and play in IMG Junior Golf World Championships in San Diego, California from 8 to 12 July and then we will drive to Palm Desert Resort in California to play in the FCG Callaway World Championships from 14 to 17 July.”

To help Dian’s parents with costs, Selborne Golf Estate hosts a fundraising golf day on Friday, 3 May. It is a fourball alliance, with two scores to count. The cost is R350 per player, which includes the game and a meal after. Games and golf carts must be booked at the Pro Shop on 087-135-0559. There are also some tees available for sponsor at R2 000 per tee.
