Swollen hands and feet, high blood pressure and headaches are some of the signs that you are consuming too much salt.

Although an essential ingredient, salt can be hazardous to your health. If you consume too much of it, you risk developing serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis.

If you’re not sure whether there’s too much sodium in your diet, consider the following symptoms:

1. Excessive thirst:

If you’re feeling much thirstier than usual, you might have been eating food with high sodium content. This is because high salt intake disrupts the fluid levels in your body. Your thirst is a sign that you need to drink more water in order to rehydrate your cells and restore the fluid balance.

2. Mild headaches:

Do you often get mild headaches and can’t seem to pinpoint the cause? They may be linked to a high salt intake, which can lead to dehydration-induced headaches.

3. Swollen hands and feet:

An overly salty meal will cause your body to retain more fluids. Your hands and feet will swell up, and you might notice that you’ve gained weight overnight. So if you have trouble taking off your ring at the end of the day, too much salt may be the culprit.

4. Hypertension:

If your doctor has recently diagnosed you with high blood pressure, it may have been because you have too much sodium in your diet. If you cut back on the amount of salt you eat, consume more fruits and vegetables, and exercise regularly, you can reduce your blood pressure significantly.
