Mid Illovo police unscathed after shootout with criminals

After the suspects opened fire on police officers, they fled into a sugarcane plantation.

MID Illovo police officers were on patrol in Marianhill Road, Eston on Tuesday, 9 April and around 1am, when they spotted a white bakkie with three occupants who failed to stop at an intersection.

The police officers attempted to intercept the vehicle but it sped off and the chase ensued.

“The suspects alighted the vehicle, opened fire at the police officers and the shootout ensued. The suspects then fled into a sugarcane plantation. The K9 Unit responded and a 30-year-old suspect was apprehended with the help of a canine. The suspect was taken to hospital for medical attention where he was under police guard. The remaining suspects, who manage to flee the scene, are still being sought by police,” said SAPS communication’s Captain Nqobile Gwala.

“Further investigations revealed that the vehicle was stolen in the Scottburgh area last year in April. Charges of attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property were opened for investigation at Mid Illovo SAPS.”

The arrested suspect was absent at the first court appearance in the Richmond Magistrates Court. The matter was postponed to 18 April 2019.
