Amanzimtoti community’s kindness funds Bullet’s surgery

After enough donations were made, Bullet had his eye removed and on Saturday, 13 April, he was reunited with his owner.

THE Amanzimtoti community rallied to see an EduPaw dog, ‘Bullet’ receive the veterinary care required to reunite him with his owner, Sbonelo Mzulwini, after he arrived at the local animal educational outreach programme in March with an ulcer in his eye.

After enough donations were made, Bullet had his eye removed and on Saturday, 13 April went home with his owner.

“Sbonelo left his dog with us at Toti SPCA for sterilisation on Saturday, 16 March after graduating from the eight-week canine care programme,” explained EduPaw founder, Cathy Keegan. “It seemed that Bullet had an old injury on his one eye, but on closer inspection, he actually had an ulcer and his eye needed to be removed.”

Sbonelo Mzulwini and Bullet before Bullet underwent the necessary eye-removal surgery.

Neither Toti SPCA nor Sbonelo could finance the surgery, which cost about R5,000, and this would leave the shelter no option but to put Bullet out of pain and suffering.

“The thought of telling Sbonelo this news was devastating, as he loves his dog dearly and we were absolutely heart-broken,” said Cathy. “I then decided to do my best to raise the funds.”

An appeal was made through the EduPaw Facebook page where the situation was explained and the community was called on to assist with their contributions. Within a short space of time, contributions totalled enough to see Bullet undergo the eye-removal surgery.

Bullet had enough funds raised by the Amanzimtoti community to undergo a sterilisation, eye-removal surgery and receive his vaccinations.

On behalf of EduPaw and the Amanzimtoti SPCA, Cathy extended their gratitude to all who contributed to the surgery.

“Thank you to Dr Yesh, Dr Omashini of Montclair Veterinary Hospital and to Pam Hay of Animal Action for all your assistance,” she said.

“He was sterilised, vaccinated and had his bad eye removed.”

Further gratitude was paid to Melissa and Tarryn of Anima-Strath, who visited Bullet with some Anima-Strath and a bouncy ball. Anima-Strath is a natural food supplement that assists animals in their recovery for overall well-being as well as during stressful situations to help their bodies cope with trauma.

Owner Sbonelo’s love for dogs and their well-being grows by the day. He is now an official EduPaw volunteer and teaches children on Saturday mornings about animal health and how to care for an animal properly. Carolyn Borchard was thanked for sponsoring Sbonelo’s EduPaw shirt and cap.
