Toti resident disagrees with municipality’s clean water statement

According to the resident, his water filter is regularly dis-coloured and this is the reason he doesn't drink the water.

An Amanzimtoti resident has disputed Umgeni Water and eThekwini Municipality city manager, Sipho Nzuza’s statements that it is safe to drink water from local taps.

Umgeni Water and the municipality responded to what they claim was speculation and rumours that surfaced on social media last week saying that potable water in parts of Durban is not safe to drink. They added that KZN is one of few parts of the world where one can drink water directly from a tap without fear of health implications.

However, an Iphala Road resident, whose identity is known to the Sun, sent in a photo of his water filter that has been dis-coloured to a rusty brown.“The water has been like this on and off since Tuesday, 2 April,” he said.

“It is regularly dis-coloured, that is why we don’t drink the water. It is not safe to do so. I had to take my six-year-old son to the doctor on Wednesday because he had an upset tummy. I can’t say where he picked it up but it could be from drinking the water.”
