Durban residents assured water is safe to drink

Umgeni Water and the municipality have urged consumers to ignore the rumours and speculations.

Umgeni Water has reiterated eThekwini Municipality city manager, Sipho Nzuza’s confirmation that it is safe to drink water from local taps.

In a press release, it stated: “Umgeni Water is proud to state that the quality of potable water it produces consistently meets the requirements of the South African national drinking water quality standards and we use conventional and advanced treatment processes that are bench-marked to the specifications of international organisations.

“Our area of supply in KZN is one of few parts of the world where one can drink water directly from a tap without fear of health implications, and we will work tirelessly with our customers to maintain such excellent potable water and drinking water standards.”

Umgeni Water and the municipality were responding to what they claim is speculation and rumours that surfaced on social media this week that potable water in parts of Durban is not safe to drink. “This information is untrue. Consumers are urged to ignore the rumour and speculation.”
