Crowdfunding campaign launched for Amanzimtoti cancer patient

If all goes well, it is hoped Alma will get to spend Easter at home before returning to hospital for her next five blocks of treatment.

Amanzimtoti residents can assist 16-year-old Alma van Heerden in her fight against acute lymphoma leukaemia by donating to a fundraising campaign.

“Last week we received the dreaded phone call from our medical aid to inform us our benefits are running out. We have started a fundraising campaign on the Gogetfunding platform to assist with Alma’s medical bills,” said her mother Hannalize.

Alma is currently undergoing a block of treatment and is expected to be home either at the end of this week or early next week. She is halfway through her treatment. “She is doing pretty well. Reality has kicked in and where she was always part of everything, now she is forced to watch from the outside looking in. That is the worst part for her, and the long periods of isolation.”

On Monday her neutrophils (a type of white blood cell that protects us from infections) count was a low 0.1, so doctors had to increase that before she could receive her platelets injection, which cost between R5,000 and R7,000 each.

If all goes well, it is hoped Alma will get to spend Easter at home before returning to hospital for her next five blocks of treatment. “Any little infection delays her treatment, so we hope all goes well. However, the end is in sight and we are so grateful for all the wonderful support we have received from the Amanzimtoti community.”

Hannalize was full of praise for the excellent care they have received from the doctors and hospital and her parents are therefore reluctant to change that halfway through her treatment. You can help by donating on the web page: https://gogetfunding.com/almas-kicking-cancer-to-the-curb-fund.
