Monica makes waves at national swimming championships

In the 200m individual medley, which is her favourite event, Monica Botha finished fifth in a time of 2.45.45.

Amanzimtoti junior swimming sensation Monica Botha impressed at the 2019 SA National Junior Age Group Championships at Kings Park Aquatic Centre from 20 to 24 March. A splash of 740 swimmers from Southern Africa met in the long course 50m pool for the champs, which doubles as the official trials for the seventh FINA Junior World Swimming Championships.

Monica, who is the Aqua Lifestyle Centre brand ambassador, entered eight events in the girls’ 12-year-old category. She qualified for five of the eight finals, with four personal bests and placed in the top four in the 400m (5.02.30) and 200m long course freestyle (2.21.78), seventh in the 100m freestyle (1.04.98) and sixth in the 50m freestyle (30.51).

In the 200m individual medley, which is her favourite event, she finished fifth in a time of 2.45.45 and eighth overall in the 200m backstroke in 2.45.03.

Monica dedicated her races to the CHOC Cows (SA Childhood Cancer Foundation) and Gold in September, which supports child cancer research. She actively creates awareness and raises funds for childhood cancer on an ongoing basis and is an everyday hero for Gold in September.
