Beautify your skin with DIY face scrubs

Avoid micro-beads and harsh products by making your very own face scrub at home with these five delicious recipes.

A growing awareness around the dangers of many store-bought products, especially when it comes to skin care, has caused people to become creative with their DIY scrubs, masks, balms, hair masks, mouth washes and more.

Here are five delicious DIY face scrub recipes:

1. Simple sugar face scrub

  • 1 tsp organic cane sugar (or granulated sugar)
  • 1 – 2 drops of water
  • 1 – 2 drops orange, lemon, lavender or melaleuca essential oil (optional)

How you do it:

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Using the tips of your fingers, gently rub scrub into clean face. Take care to avoid the eyes. Remove by rinsing with cool water, and pat dry with a clean towel. Add on a layer of oil as a moisturiser if necessary.

2. Two ingredient sugar face scrub

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp sugar

How you do it:

Combine coconut oil and sugar in a small bowl, and stir to combine. Rub sugar face scrub into clean facial or neck skin, using gentle circular motions, for 60 seconds. Rinse dry with warm water.

This is an easy recipe to whip up when you don’t have a lot of time. You can increase the ratios to make more of the mix, and store for up to 3 months. If you live in a hotter climate, you may want to store this mixture in the fridge, as coconut oil has a relatively low melting point.

  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

How you do it:

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Lather generously onto clean face, rubbing gently into the skin for 60 seconds. Allow to set on skin for 10 minutes, if desired, then rinse clean with warm water.

4. Blueberry and honey scrub

  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
  • 2 tbsp honey (raw and local is best)
  • 1 – 2 tbsp sugar

How you do it:

Combine all ingredients in a small food processor, and blend until smooth. Add a generous layer to clean face, and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Rinse clean with warm water.
