Amanzimtoti finch breeder crows about annual show

An exquisite array of finches from all over the world, which are celebrated and cared for by passionate South African owners, will be on show.

BIRDERS and nature enthusiasts alike are invited to the Durban Finch Breeders fifth annual show which takes place on Saturday, 23 March in Queensburgh.

An exquisite array of finches from all over the world, which are celebrated and cared for by passionate South African owners, will be on show.

Finches from all corners of the globe, in all sizes and tropical colours, will be on show at the national event hosted by the Durban Finch Breeders Club. Judges will assess and mark the different breeds of birds in different categories. The finches are predominantly from outside of South Africa, but are owned and bred by locals who possess a passion for the beautiful bird species.

“We have already received some 460 entries, and are still awaiting entries from another big club, which will push the entries up to over 550,” explained Amanzimtoti resident and treasurer of the Durban Finch Breeders, Laurence Kemp. “This is a great event to attend. There is no entrance fee and the day will see hundreds of beautiful birds on show.”

While bird entries have closed, late entries will be accepted.

Laurence explained that breeding the birds is more than just a hobby to him. Speaking of his passion, he said: “I can have the worst day possible, but getting home and going to sit with my finches brings me utter peace and tranquility.”

He added that many club members feel the same about their cherished birds, but sadly the legacy of finch breeding may not continue forever, as not many youths have taken to the hobby.

The show takes place at the VC Hall, Flame Lily Moth and Retirement Village, 565 Stella Road, Queensburgh from 11am until 4pm. Call Taffy Pelser 031-765-5558, 083-262-7531 or email taffy@thunderauctioneers,co.za, or Peter Appelgryn on 072-355-2796 or email appel@saol.com.
