Amanzimtoti councillor provides updates on infrastructure projects

eThekwini’s water and sanitation department is set to roll out a major project which will comprise new water supply infrastructure being installed along Somerset Way.

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge reports on municipal projects currently underway in the ward.

Riverside Road traffic calming

The second phase of traffic calming along Riverside Road, which started on Wednesday, 13 March, will result in another five, bringing the total to 10 speed humps being installed between the Ndongeni and Robin Hood intersections on the road leading from Amanzimtoti High School to the civic centre. “Residents are cautioned to slow down and observe the warning signs,” said Cllr Beetge.

Infrastructure repairs – Adams Road

Repairs to the stormwater culvert, pedestrian pathway, road surface and crash barrier near the Adams and Somerset intersection, next to Villa Vineta, will commence from Monday, 18 March.
The culvert, which was damaged during the October 2017 storm, will be re-built and feeder lines relayed along with newly-placed gabion baskets. “Residents are cautioned to construction and associated crews during the repair period.”

Sidewalk project on Winkle’s R102 and surrounds

Pedestrian sidewalks are being installed along the R102 from the Auracaria and Gordon intersection towards the Illovo River and to the Ocean View intersection. “This in an effort to ensure safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists along what is essentially a narrow road with poor visibility. Sidewalks are also being installed in sections of Oceanview and Murray Smith roads. The sidewalk installation between Winklespruit and Golf Course Road along Kingsway remains an ongoing project.”

Damaged and compromised stormwater infrastructure – Rockview Road and Kingsway intersection

“Despite roads and stormwater clearing drains at the given location, water still rises beyond expectation during the slightest downpour, rendering passage along Rockview all but impossible.” Given that the area was not prone thereto during the October 2017 storm, Cllr Beetge has requested coastal stormwater engineering to investigate and determine the cause in an effort to rectify. Following a site visit on Tuesday, 12 March, a report and guidance to address is awaited.

Following installation of the main line, several secondary lines will be installed to enhance supply to residents of the Kingsburgh area.
