A MASSIVE abnormal load was transported to Sappi Saiccor in Umkomaas last week.

Four evaporators, each weighing 34,8 metric tons, recently arrived in Durban harbour aboard the ‘City of Durban’.

The evaporators imported by Ahlstrom SA, provided Grindrod Seafreight and TLD Transport with a number of logistical challenges. The only route from Durban harbour along the N2 to Sappi had a number of low overhead bridges, with the clearance being as little as 50mm in places.


A TOTI municipal bakkie was stolen at gunpoint from a borough employee in Prospecton last week.

Town clerk Dave Ongley said work was being done at a sewage pump station opposite South African Breweries when the incident occurred.

The one-ton Hilux bakkie was parked outside the building at the time. One of the workers returned to the vehicle and was approached by a group of men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.


WATCH out, there’ll be sirens about.

Next Tuesday, 22 March AECI will be testing a siren and a public address system on the golf course at Umbogintwini.

The exercise will take place at 10am. “This is in line with the recommendation that we improve our community warning system,” explained Phil Thornton of AECI. The siren will be a different tone from normal. “The power and intelligibility of the PA system will also be tested,” said Phil.


DOONSIDE Butchery supplied 70 steaks for a giant prego roll in aid of a Red Nose Day event in Durban.

The 7,5m long roll was donated by Rennie Brothers and Longhorn, South Beach prepared the roll and carried it 1km to their restaurant where 28 hungry children made short work of it.

The roll is the longest on record and has been entered in the Red Nose book of records. Children from the Sinetemba Shelter for street children and the William Clarke Gardens Home were delighted to be invited for lunch on the day.


A GANG of shoplifters struck in the Toti CBD at lunch time last Thursday, 10 March.

According to a sales assistant at Milady’s, the drama started at about 1pm when two women entered the store and asked for help.

While they were being attended to, two more women came in and became ‘quite demanding’. Then three more women came into the shop, followed by another group of men and women, until about 20 ‘clients’ were on the premises.
