Rules to follow when inheriting a firearm

A person can only take possession of a firearm once the licence for that particular firearm has been issued.

The South African Police Service has warned the public against being in the possession of a firearm inherited from a deceased person’s estate.

If a person has inherited a firearm, the following applies:

· Approach the designated firearm officer at the nearest police station for advice.

· Apply for a new firearm licence in terms of the Firearm Control Act, Act No. 60 of 2000. This comprises a competency certificate from an accredited agent and obtaining a background check by SAPS and compliance with gun safe regulations.

· Should the new owner not wish to keep the firearm, he/she can hand the firearm to a registered firearm dealer or to the police for destruction.

A person can only take possession of a firearm once the licence for that particular firearm has been issued. eThekwini Outer South acting cluster commander, Brigadier Vukani Mgobhozi urges the public to be more cautious in handling firearms inherited as part of deceased estate.
