Police recover stolen vehicles worth R8m

The operation focused on syndicates that steal and hijack vehicles with the intention of selling them on the black market.

Fifty vehicles valued at more than R8-million were seized during a three-week operation throughout the province in an attempt to deal with the threat of cloned vehicles.

The operation involved teamwork between police officers attached to the vehicle crime investigation units from Isipingo, Port Shepstone, Empangeni and Alexandra Road, as well as crime intelligence and visible policing.

Lt Col Thulani Zwane of the KZN SAPS media centre said the operation was held between 4 and 22 February, and focused on intelligence with regards to syndicates that steal and hijack vehicles with the intention of altering their identification numbers and selling them on the black market.

“Swoops were conducted in the eThekwini, Port Shepstone, Pietermaritzburg and Empangeni areas. Majority of these vehicles that were recovered were either hijacked or stolen in eThekwini,” said Lt Col Zwane.
