R15-m traffic system revamp for Upper South coast by year-end

Work is currently underway to install the equipment from Isipingo to Illovo River.

The National Roads Agency (SANRAL) hopes to have newly-introduced traffic monitoring equipment on the N2 south operational by the end of the year.

SANRAL Eastern Region project manager, Dudley Mbambo said this includes electronic message boards, vehicle detection systems and yellow speed traffic cameras. “It’s to keep people informed about incidents on the road like collisions and protests,” he said.

Work is currently underway to install the equipment from Isipingo to Illovo River, as well as between the King Shaka International Airport and Salt Rock interchanges.

“We will be installing additional cameras on the free management system and other devices we will be implementing are variable signs. We use cameras to detect incidents, so that we can warn road users of incidents ahead – through variable message signs and through our portal. The R15-million revamp project started in October and the aim is to have all the devices operational by the end of the year,” said Mbambo.
