How you can complicate car thieves’ lives

Safety guidelines to deter car thieves

As property related crimes increase, the theft out of and from motor vehicles and motorcycles is of concern to Brighton Beach police.

People’s vehicles are being stolen from within and outside their properties.

All areas are affected, with the thefts occurring during the night and day. Vehicles targeted predominantly appear not to have been fitted with a tracking device.

Safety guidelines to deter car thieves:

  • Park facing an obstacle. Turn the wheels towards the kerb and lock the steering.
  • By installing a starter-interrupt or ‘kill’ switch, you can disable your vehicle to prevent it from being stolen.
  • Install a mechanical device which locks the steering wheel, column or brakes (clubs/collars/J-bars) to minimise your vehicle being stolen, as these security features delay the car thieves.
  • When locking your vehicle, check the door handle to ensure it locks successfully.
  • When activating your car’s alarm system with your remote, face the vehicle. Ensure you hear the doors lock and see the indicator light flash. Wait for 30 second before you walk off to ensure your locking device is not deactivated.
  • Where possible, always park inside a premises.
  • Ensure security features such as the main entrance gate to the premises is locked.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight. Lock them away in the boot of the car.

Community members are urged to make reports of suspicious persons or vehicles.  If possible obtain the vehicle registration, colour, make and any significant marks or stickers.

With suspicious-looking people, take note of their clothing, especially their shoes as criminals often wear layers of clothing and dispose of the top layer when they are being pursued. Also take note of their body features.

The public is urged to immediately contact 10111 or Brighton Beach SAPS on 031-451-8059/8060 or contact their security company if they have such a service in the event of an emergency.
