AWI to go green for St Patrick’s Day

It is also the AGM and several portfolios need to be filled.

THE new year opened with a blast – the blast of wind on Sunday, 3 February which damaged the roof of Amanzimtoti library.

The wind damage led to an ingress of rain and the collapse of ceiling boards.

The library and activities room have been declared dangerous and out of bounds, so Amanzimtoti Women’s Institute (AWI) had to find an alternate venue. The hall at the Church of the Good Shepherd was sourced, proved to be a lovely venue and will be used until the activities room is available again.

The AWI meeting held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 615 Kingsway Amanzimtoti on Tuesday, 12 February was opened by president, Yvonne Dixie who welcomed members back after a long break. The WI was pleased to have six visitors and one new member, Rose King who joined its ranks. After the singing of Unity, Myrna read the Mary Stewart Collect. Prayers are with members who are not well, including Alice, Kay and Norma.

There was a bumper collection of long-life milk for the elders. Take along porridge and cereals next month. Numerous items for recycling such as plastic bags, bottle tops, bread tags and can ring pulls were also brought for distribution. Yvonne showed an eco-brick, which is made from an empty two-litre plastic bottle filled with plastic waste scraps.

Next month’s theme is St Patrick’s Day, so members should dress in green. It is also the AGM and several portfolios need to be filled. Members should consider giving a little of their time to help run WI, this association which gives everyone such pleasure.

After a tea with delicious snacks provided by Alicia, Angela and Barbara Lane, Carolyn Borchard shared her recent experience of travelling by sea from Vienna to Durban via the Suez Canal. Carolyn was fascinated by the canal and told all a bit of its history and the intriguing way in which its operated.
