The management of Amanzimtoti SAPS urges the community to take note of the procedure to follow when the owner of a licensed firearm dies.
The family has the following options:
* Re-licence the firearm;
* Sell the firearm to a registered firearms dealer or private person;
* Deactivate the firearm by going to a gunsmith for a quotation and thereafter the police station to complete the necessary application forms; or
* Hand in the firearm at the nearest police station for destruction.
“All firearms belonging to a deceased family member can be brought to the office of the designated firearm officer at Amanzimtoti police station at room 1 between 8am and 3pm on Mondays to Fridays,” said Toti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy.
