ALERT: Pipeline Beach closed to public following unconfirmed ‘chemical spill’

Authorities are awaiting test results.

PIPELINE BEACH has been closed temporarily after fishermen noticed an oily substance or possible chemical spill seeping up to the surface of the sand this morning, Thursday, 14 February.

Authorities were contacted immediately, samples have since been taken and feedback is on its way.

This morning Ajay Ramlall posted on Facebook group Daiwa Anglers Fan Club South Africa that Pipeline Beach is closed until further notice, as anglers noticed that there had been a spill of an unknown substance coming up to the surface of the sand.

Ward 97’s Cllr Andre Beetge explained that the spill was reported to the relevant authorities this morning before the beach was closed to the public and sampling was taken for testing.

“Acacia Operating Services worked with beach management to ensure the area was contained immediately so samples could be taken,” he said. “It’s either originating from the line or the underground line. While the substance being leaked (still unknown) isn’t necessarily harmful, it is of concern,” said Cllr Beetge.

Authorities are awaiting test results. Cllr Beetge explained that an update will be provided when new information arises. Pipeline Beach is still closed to the public.
