Durban NSRI team assists damaged watercraft

The Durban base of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) responded to two requests for assistance by Durban-based watercraft earlier this week.

At about noon on Tuesday, 29 January, the NSRI responded to a Transnet National Ports Authority request for assistance to a local yacht which incurred damage while out on a morning cruise. The yacht, with three crew on board, reportedly struck an unidentified object while sailing, causing rudder damage.

According to NSRI Durban duty coxswain Clifford Ireland, the NSRI rescue craft Eikos Rescuer II rendezvoused with the yacht some two nautical miles offshore of the port of Durban and found them safe. A tow line was rigged before the yacht was towed back to port, without further incident.

At about 7.30am on Sunday, 27 January, a jetskier required assistance about a nautical mile offshore of the port.

Sea rescue craft Megan II assisted the jet-skier, whose craft had experienced motor mechanical failure. It was towed to Vetchies Pier.
