THERE has been yet another diving death off County shores.

Greg Barnard (28) drowned while on a training dive off Rocky Bay, Park Rynie on Sunday.

It appears Greg, who was an experienced diver, suffered a black-out when he was diving with a snorkel and weight belt. He was in a group of three divers who were free-diving.


DESPITE an incident on the N2 near the Umgababa turn-off, the SA Defence Force has decided to withdraw troops from the three bases along the main road.

A Vanderbijlpark woman had a narrow escape near Umgababa last Thursday, when youths from the area stoned her car and tried to rob her. According to station commander of Toti SAP, Major Johan Mouton, the woman was approached by youths after her car had broken down on the freeway.


COMMUTERS looked on in horror when a fellow train passenger had his legs crushed at Doonside station on Tuesday.

At about 5.30pm the unidentified man either fell from the platform or from the carriage. His legs were amputated by the wheels of the train on the track. The train came to a halt and passers-by rushed to aid the injured man.


AMANZIMTOTI residents will not be affected by the Umgeni Water price increase until July.

The Umgeni Water increase will come into effect from 1 March.

“It is up to the relevant authorities to decide when and how much will be passed on to their individual consumers,” said Graham Atkinson, chief executive of Umgeni Water. The bulk water tariff rate will increase by 6,9% for all coastal regions.


IT was back to work as usual for Toyota workers at Prospecton this week.

During December about 5,000 workers embarked on a work stoppage over a dispute involving tax deductions on their Christmas pay.

This resulted in the plant closing early for the summer holidays. Roger Houghton, public relations spokesman for Toyota, said workers returned on Tuesday with only the normal level of absenteeism.


A LOCAL graffiti artist, using road surfaces to convey his messages, has been warned to pack away his spray-can or face prosecution.

Dave Ongley, town clerk of Amanzimtoti, said he was aware of the problem and said offenders caught defacing roads and other property would be very severely dealt with. The artist’s trademark, a person with outstretched arms and legs, has been spray-painted, larger than life, on Thomas Holstead and Ndongeni Drive.
