Kingsway High art pupils join the brushing up of Amanzimtoti tourist hotspots

The circle, which is the usual site of the iconic Christmas tree over the festive season, has undergone repairs, received a fresh coat of paint and rainbow stairs in the last few months.

KINGSWAY High School art pupils this week began painting murals on the wall of the Amanzimtoti promenade’s south-end circle, in an effort to continue the beautiful transformation of the area that is spearheaded by Sapphire Coast Tourism.

The circle, which is the usual site of the iconic Christmas tree over the festive season, has undergone repairs, received a fresh coat of paint and rainbow stairs in the last few months.

Kingsway High School’s Keisha Tsouros completed her first mural on the wall of the Amanzimtoti promenade’s south-end circle on Tuesday, 4 December.

Sapphire Coast Tourism (SCT) has worked tirelessly throughout the year to beautify the Sapphire Coast. A fresh blue hue can be seen near all bridges and walls throughout the area. The idea extended to the circle on the Toti promenade, where the previously much-dilapidated area has been given a complete make-over, all funded by the tourism body.

Kingsway High School grade 10 art pupils, Yashira Singh and Nia Small brave the December heat to complete a beautiful mural on the wall of the Amanzimtoti promenade’s south-end circle on Tuesday, 4 December.

The stairs and walls, which were broken and cracked, had to be built up before they could be painted. Once it received a few coats of brightly-coloured paint, the community was asked to come forward and paint murals on the walls, depicting the sporty goings-on in the area.

Having some time on their hands after the completion of year-end exams before the start of the holidays, Kingsway High School’s grade 9 to 11 art pupils relished the chance to not only improve their painting skills, but also continue the beautification.

SCT welcomes donations as paint used throughout the town, and on these murals, comes at a hefty cost. The Christmas tree structure which usually brightens the circle over the festive season is without lights this year, as they have broken.

Again, SCT cannot afford to purchase new lights on its own. The tourism group welcome donations towards the cost of new lights. Chairman Romy Wenzel explained that while SCT receives annual funding from the municipality, it only lasts so long and doesn’t cover all the projects which need to be tackled throughout the year.

A colourful work in progress.

“Other than that, we receive membership contributions on an annual basis from tourism product owners within the SCT region. However, we urge more businesses to sign up, as only a small number of establishments renew annually. Funding gets used to uplift the area, publicise events and plan holiday programmes throughout the year,” said Romy.

SCT offers its gratitude and appreciation to Seabreeze Build-It as building materials, paint and equipment were offered to the organisation at subsidised rates.
