Fighting abuse in 16 Days

The theme for this year’s campaign is #HearMeToo: End Violence against Women and Children.

Gender-based abuse takes centre stage as Amanzimtoti non-profits work to highlight the importance of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, which is currently underway.

The campaign runs from 25 November to 10 December and the aim is to create awareness regarding the abuse against women and children. Turning Point Amanzimtoti (ex-Amanzimtoti Trauma Unit) centre manager, Loraine Odendaal said violence against women and children is never acceptable, never excusable and never tolerable.

“During this campaign we create awareness around the following issues:

* How do you know you are being abused?

* What do you do when you are being abused?

* What are the signs that your friend is being abused?

* How can you help an abused friend?

* How can you help an abused child?

* Who can you contact if someone you know is being abused?

* How can a person stop abusing their partner or child?

* Who can you contact to stop your abusive behaviour?”

The theme for this year’s campaign is #HearMeToo: End Violence against Women and Children, which coincided with the launch of the GBV (gender based violence) robot. The green light signals #lights4Life, the orange light #SeeTheSigns and the red light for #Run4YourLife.

“Amanzimtoti Turning Point plans to have a 16 Days of Activism awareness talk at the Amanzimtoti taxi rank on Friday, 7 December,” said Loraine. Call the ATU office on 031-903-7777 if you need any further information regarding the 16 Days of Activism or the awareness talks.
