10 tips to keep your kids safe these holidays

The Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) released the following tips to keep your child safe while they are at home, out and about, online or even at a party.

1. Make them aware of the dangers of openly displaying their mobile phones or tablets. They could be targeted for these devices.

2. Also, the dangers of being totally preoccupied with their mobile phones. Being unaware of their surroundings and what is going on around them could endanger them and make them soft targets for theft or an accident.

3. Your child should know your contact numbers and address in case of an emergency.

4. Do not accept anything from strangers without a parent’s consent.

5. They should keep their friends close when going to an unfamiliar place or event.

6. It would be unusual for a child to receive a job offer especially from a stranger. They should decline and let a parent know.

7. The best relationship with your child is when they trust you enough to share anything that makes them uncomfortable.

8. Online safety – they need to understand that you are not spying when you monitor their online activity. Predators also lurk online.

9. If someone tries to force your child into a vehicle, they should scream to attract attention and try to flee without endangering themselves.

10. Have a plan of action that your child is aware of in the event they go missing or get separated from you in a public place. A predetermined meeting point such as a security office or information counter should be part of the plan.
