TRAFFIC ALERT: Arterial water pipe break closes Kingsway in Athlone Park

The water department team worked since Thursday afternoon, trying to identify where the break had occurred on the line.

KINGSWAY in Athlone Park is closed to traffic this Friday morning, 16 November as a water department crew work to repair a break in an arterial pipe near the intersection of Kingsway and Chelsea Road.

Kingsway is closed on the stretch between Heather Road and Cherry Road.

The water department team worked since Thursday afternoon, trying to identify where the break had occurred on the line. The northbound lane of Kingsway was closed off on Thursday afternoon, to allow a TLB digger and crew to excavate a section of the road. Traffic was initially diverted into the oncoming lane to bypass the site.

However, after working through the night and into Friday morning, they discovered the break in the arterial water pipeline that runs along the opposite shoulder of the southbound lane of Kingsway at the intersection.

The section of that pipe along which the break occurred has now been replaced with a new PVC section, before they flush the line and test. The excavation site will be backfilled in the next few hours, whereafter traffic access will be reinstated.

It is unclear which parts of Athlone Park have been affected by the water outage while the repairs were underway, but supply should be reinstated in a matter of hours.
