Durban’s orange bag recycling set to resume soon

The disposal of household waste with the environment in mind is hopefully set to resume before the festive season kicks off.

AMANZIMTOTI recyclers will be glad to hear that the orange bag recycling project, which was shelved after tender irregularities, is due to kickstart soon after R9.9-m was approved from the Ethekwini Municipality’s emergency funding budget.

The disposal of household waste with the environment in mind is hopefully set to resume before the festive season kicks off.

Cllr Andre Beetge explained that after several meetings with the relevant parties, some R9,9m was approved from emergency funding for the purchase of the orange bags and a supplier was identified.

By the end of November, the bag supply should be secured and hopefully meet the quality and quantity required. Following this, focus will then move to securing the collection of the bags. It is hoped that the original collectors of the bags – who have been without work for such a time – are ready and able to come back on board once the bags arrive.

Cllr Beetge confirmed the municipality is exerting pressure on the parties responsible, in an effort to get the recycling programme back on track as soon as possible, with the aim to hopefully restart before the festive season kicks off.

The community can continue recycling their household waste but must drop it off at relevant places of their own accord.
