Amanzimtoti SPCA urges pets be kept safe during fireworks

Manager Tracey Girling explained that throughout the festive season the SPCA will remain at the service of the community.

AS it is the busiest time of the year, Amanzimtoti SPCA reminds the community about important aspects to keep in mind about pets and strays through the chaos of the silly season.

Manager Tracey Girling explained that throughout the festive season the SPCA will remain at the service of the community.

“We are only closed Sundays and public holidays but we work every day to feed and medicate the animals,” she explained. “People can bring in strays at anytime as there is someone on duty at the SPCA 24 hours a day. The emergency number 072-122-7288 is for emergencies only. We do not fetch strays after hours, but only deal with injured animals.”

And don’t forget: Sign up as Santa’s wrapper for Amanzimtoti SPCA fundraiser

She clarified that all strays picked up or spotted after hours or on public holidays can be dropped off at the shelter, as there will be someone there, but the SPCA staff will not be make collections.

“Keep all animals safe during the times when fireworks are being let off. Note the use of fireworks by people outside of the specified times is not a matter for the SPCA but rather it is a police matter,” she said.

Lastly, Tracey explained the importance of reporting strays found or pets lost. “A distraught woman came in this week to report her one-year-old German Shepherd as missing. While looking for their dog, her daughter found it in someone else’s yard, which is theft and for which a case can be opened,” she said.

Tracey and the Amanzimtoti SPCA thanked the community for its unconditional and unending support throughout the year. “We wish everyone a very safe and merry Christmas,” said Tracey. “Spread love and kindness among yourselves and especially those furry friends.”
