When the Sun arrived at the scene of the blaze shortly before 4pm, a huge black cloud was billowing into the sky over the industrial suburb.

By 5pm, firefighters from Umlazi, Mobeni, Prospecton and Umkomaas fire stations had converged and worked on bringing it under control from three sides of the huge warehouse.

A water carrier and five engines as well as chemical fire response team also responded. A SAPS helicopter circled the sky around Prospecton, while Metro Police directed traffic.

Unperturbed, at a factory right next door, striking workers chanted struggle slogans as riot gear-clad private security stood guard at the factory entrance.

By 5pm, the cloud had dissipated and firefighters focused their efforts on dousing the flames of a blaze which appeared to be waning.
