Pensioners Friend Amanzimtoti to provide seniors-friendly advice

A public launch of the Pensioners Friend Amanzimtoti will take place on Tuesday, 16 October at 305 Guest House, Iphala Road.

A social media page to help pensioners in need is now available in print form.

Toti pensioners, Errol and Sharon-Ann Theron started the Facebook page ‘Pensioners Friend Amanzimtoti’ to help other pensioners find specific information about facilities and benefits available to them.

They believe the helpful information they disseminate can make a big difference to the lives of the many pensioners who reside on the Upper South Coast, especially those who are new to the area.

Sun editor Michelle Izatt said the Therons have involved themselves in similar civic-related matters for the past decade.

The idea was to consolidate this sort of information all in one place, to help local oldies and make a positive difference in Amanzimtoti. The plan has received so much positive support that Errol and Sharon-Ann would like to grow it with a free monthly booklet that will be available at local outlets.

“We felt we could expand it and get it out to more people,” said the civic-minded couple who are involved with a number of NGOs and welfare organisations. “The full colour booklet is three A4-sized sheets of paper, folded into 12 A5-pages. It contains tips on how to save money, health tips and information on items of interest to pensioners.”

With the growing support the page has garnered, the founders have brought more people on board and a five-man committee has been formed, with plans to form a non-profit organisation. “There’s such a need for something like this. We are always fielding phone calls from people looking for advice and we never turn anyone away.

We hope to get 500 booklets printed every month but there will be a guaranteed 200 copies available at old age homes, churches, advertisers’ premises and selected shops.”

A public launch of the Pensioners Friend Amanzimtoti will take place on Tuesday, 16 October at 305 Guest House, Iphala Road, Amanzimtoti. Local companies who offer pensioners’ discounts or services that would like to advertise in the booklet can call Errol and Sharon-Ann on 083-312-5360 or email errolandsharon@gmail.com.
