Beach action heats up for lifesavers

From clean-ups, successful retests and training sessions, the club has certainly kicked off the lifesaving season and looks forward to all it will hold.

THE past weekends have seen Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club booming with a host of activities taking place.

From clean-ups, successful retests and training sessions, the club has certainly kicked off the lifesaving season and looks forward to all it will hold.

“On Saturday, 15 September four seniors successfully completed their annual retest. A big well done to Jethro Gray, Micheal Land, Tyler Main and Ruben Myburgh for doing the first retest of the season,” said WSLC’s Mikayla Sumption.

“On the same day was International Coastal Clean-Up Day. WSLC held a clean-up at the beach where many of our members participated in making our coastline that much more beautiful. Winkle was also present at the clean-up organised by Clean Surf Project, held at Twini Beach and headed by Denzil van der Westhuizen.”

Mikayla beamed at the success of both clean-ups and thanked all who got involved.

On Sunday, the clouds didn’t scare anyone away as the nippers held their first official training session on the beach. The fun-filled morning got the nippers moving and excited about the competitive season ahead.

WSLC’s up and coming lifeguards, who are training to get their Junior Lifeguard Award (JLA), also participated in yet another hard training session. They are very eager to complete their JLA exam so they can begin doing duties and participating more intensely in lifesaving competitions.

Both junior and senior lifeguards are hard at work training for the up and coming competitions. Training takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays, and juniors and seniors are reminded to keep attending training sessions.

WSLC looks forward to many more busy weekends, and equally to seeing everyone on the beach as summer approaches.
