TOTI man Gavin Daniel, is at the centre of the Thor Chemicals controversy.

Mr Daniel, factory manager of the mercury recycling plant at Cato Ridge, was arrested along with his managing director, Steve van der Vyver and chief supervisor, Bill Smith.

The men face charges of culpable homicide following the death of an employee from mercury poisoning.


LOCAL lady, Ann Sperring, was attacked in her bed by an alleged rabid dog last week.

Mrs Sperring was reading in her bed on Tuesday night when a stray dog entered her bedroom and attacked her, biting her on the arm.

Her cries attracted her son, Charles who fought off the dog with a stick. The dog managed to escape, so it is still unconfirmed whether the dog was in fact rabid or not.


DETAILS on a new industrial township to be built by AECI in Umbogintwini are to be released shortly.

AECI’s Simon Noyes-Lewis said the final details were being cleared with a lawyer and that the official press release would soon be available. The project will provide sites for about 100 factories and a few commercial sites.


AN amount of R11,942 was inadvertently left off the Kingsburgh budget for the health department.

The amount is in respect of Rentokil Calmic Hygiene Services for ablution blocks. This money can only be spent if savings in other areas of the health department are made.

Burnett Marais, Kingsburgh’s town clerk, said it is difficult to know where to cut costs, but the situation will be assessed at the end of the year.


A SCOTTBURGH resident aims to shatter a world record in the 400m at the 10th World Veteran Games in Japan in October.

Ralie Rossouw has clocked 61,8 seconds for the 400m event and the world record for her age group, 50 to 54 years, is 63,2 seconds.

This record has survived since 1975. Her astounding time was recorded on the Scottburgh High School athletics track and she is confident she can better it under the pressure of competition.
