Anti-crime activist hits the road for Amanzimtoti

Activist Jan Mabuyakhulu, who speaks out against women and child abuse, hit the road on on Tuesday, 18 September for his latest walk from Mtubatuba to Amanzimtoti.
On Wednesday morning, 26 September Jan had reached Umhlanga, well on his way to reaching Toti by 1 October.

Shocked by the recent release of the national crime statistics, and especially saddened by the increasing rate of sexual offences and murder in KZN, Jan decided that another anti-abuse walk was on the cards.

He spoke to Zululand Observer reporter, Tamlyn Jolly before he set out on his latest crusade. “The law is not working for us law-abiding citizens but it is working for the criminals,” he said. “The crime statistics are far too high and the fact that they are increasing rather than decreasing is very worrying.”

Jan’s walk will take about two weeks, and he plans to hold education and awareness talks at schools, churches or other venues along the way.“Together with the Office of the Premier, I am arranging an awareness talk and campaign in Chatsworth where child trafficking and other violent crimes is very high. We need the province of KZN to stand together and fight this crime which seems to be out of control.

That is why I also want to encourage as many people as possible to join me for the walk. We must stand together in solidarity against crime and criminals, to help make our province safe.”

While the Office of the Premier has sponsored Jan’s accommodation along the route, he is looking for sponsorship for a new backpack, walking shoes and water for while he is walking.

In December, Jan hopes to walk from Mtubatuba to Pretoria and hand a letter to Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng to highlight the fact that the law is not protecting innocent citizens.
