Join in SDCEA cancer walk
The walk starts at 9.30am at the Ogle grounds in Ogle Road,
COMMUNITY members are encouraged to join SDCEA on its cancer walk on Wednesday, 26 September.
The walk aims to create awareness about cancer and how to live a healthy lifestyle, as statistics show cancer deaths are on the rise.
“Our aim is to raise our distress about the impacts that chemical emissions have on the surrounding communities and the effect this is having on their health and quality of life,” said SDCEA director Desmond D’Sa.

The walk starts at 9.30am at the Ogle grounds in Ogle Road, Wentworth and ends at Engen Refinery’s main gate.
Dubbed ‘cancer valley’ by SDCEA, Durban South residents face daily health struggles which has led SDCEA to campaign for a 24-hour clinic for asthma and cancer sufferers.

“This will greatly help the community and reduce the increasing levels of asthma and the mortality related to cancer. Our protest is intended to raise awareness about the high prevalence of cancer, asthma and leukaemia caused by chemical emissions emanating from Engen Refinery, SAPREF and other South Durban chemical industries. Local pastors will pray at the area and in front of the refinery where we intend to hand over a statement to management,” he added.
