How you can help Amanzimtoti SPCA

AMANZIMTOTI SPCA is feeling the pinch in the tough economic climate and has urged the community to support it in one of various ways.

The local shelter has provided the following suggestions about what can be done to help.

* Donate: Any donation, big or small, adds up to make a difference. Even as little as R20 to R30, or just R5 added to one of their collection tins can help the cause of caring for unwanted pets.

* My School Card: Log in to your My School account online and change your beneficiary to the SPCA Amanzimtoti. The animal welfare organisation receives about R2,000 from contributions made by people who swipe their My School cards every month. Imagine what could be achieved if more people did it?

* Donate pet food: Amanzimtoti SPCA relies on donations of pet food from the public to feed the animals in its care so even one tin or bag of dog food would help.

* Donate second-hand items: Donations of second hand clothes, books and household items are always hugely appreciated! As we rely on the money generated from these shops to get by each month.

* Visit and support the SPCA’s charity shops: You will undoubtedly find some incredible deals on lovely items, and what’s more, all their books cost only R5 each.

* Pet food and medication: Purchase your pet food as well as tick and flea treatments, dewormers, and collars and leads from the SPCA reception at its Nyati Road offices in Athlone Park. Their reasonable prices will help you save money while your money spent goes towards a good cause – it’s a win-win situation.

* Volunteer: The dogs up for adoption need socialisation, exercise, and most importantly, love. So pop in on a Saturday morning between 8.30am and noon to walk the dogs and give them the love they deserve. It is a lot of fun and it’s fulfilling but don’t forget to wear old clothes and takkies.

* Adopt: If you are thinking about adding a new pet to your family, make Amanzimtoti SPCA your first stop. You can find adults dogs and cats, as well as puppies and kittens up for adoption. You are bound to find the perfect pet for your family, and most importantly, you will be saving a life.

* Report cruelty: If you witness any animal abuse or neglect, report it. If possible and only if it is safe to do so, try to capture video footage of the abuse, so that there is sufficient proof for the SPCA to confiscate the animal.
