Women’s Month 21 Club lunch tutored on safety

Captain Charlene van der Spuy, SAPS Amanzimtoti communications officer, was guest speaker.

THE 21 Club members and guests came out dressed in a favourite outfit to celebrate Women’s Month at the recent meeting.

The decor featured all things feminine – flowers, candles in fancy wine bottles and fair cameo ladies.

The Lords and Legends lunch was a winner. Roast pork and trimmings was followed by a decadent tiramisu dessert. 21 Club was fortunate to have Captain Charlene van der Spuy, SAPS Amanzimtoti communications officer, as its guest speaker.

Hailing from Bonteheuwel in the Western Cape, Charlene has always had community safety at heart and has served with the SAPS since becoming a constable in 1991. What a far cry from her position today in Toti, which involves her keeping the community informed through the media and events. Among other commitments, she is the chairman for the Better Together Network which links NGOs, NPOs, churches and businesses for community networking. Charlene gave practical advice about dangers at home, in vehicles and in public places. She even warned against the unnecessary risk of wearing expensive jewellery. She explained the folly of resisting an attacker or burglar. Unfortunately, crime has for some become a career choice. While the perpetrator may not set out to harm you, he may well do so if you thwart his plans to complete his job.

Charlene’s warm personality prevailed throughout her talk and she finished with encouraging words: “Be alert, care for your community and stay safe. Although we live in a country with many challenges, it is an amazing country with wonderful, loving and giving people.”

21 Club’s luncheon to celebrate Spring will be held at Lords and Legends conference room at noon for 12.30pm on Wednesday, 26 September. The theme is ‘bright and beautiful’ and hats are optional but welcome.

Guest speaker is Zanele Njapha, local young teacher and recently published author. Zanele will unfold her journey towards self-publishing her novel ‘An Eye for Love’ and the way forward.

Confirmation to attend or not must be received by the relevant committee members by Friday, 21 September. Remember to take a grocery item for Lions Club. Only members may invite a guest who will be accommodated if there is space.
