Roll up your sleeves for Amanzimtoti coastal clean-up
Check out the different clean-up points around town and who to contact if unsure of anything.
THE community is invited to collectively roll up their sleeves, don their gloves and get stuck into one of the many local clean-ups taking place this International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday, 15 September.
While keeping one’s town clean shouldn’t be restricted to a date on a calendar, this day marks an extra effort made by proud residents around the world.
Clean-up points and co-ordinators are:
- Umbogintwini River mouth (meet on the sanded parking area at the lower end of Golf Course Road) – Denzil van der Westhuizen on 082-802-3353.
- Amanzimtoti River mouth (meet in the lagoon parking area) – Andrew Manning on 082-370-4702.
- Chain Rocks (meet in the lagoon parking area at Amanzimtoti) – Adam Cruickshank on 061-485-3625.
- Illanda Wilds and trails along Hutchison Park (meet in the parking area south of Lords and Legends) – Craig Chamier on 082-454-0635.
- Little Amanzimtoti River mouth (meet in front of Baggies kiosk) – Lory on 081-778-4303.
- Winklespruit River mouth (meet on the grass in front of the lifesaving club) – Neville Hazel on 082-574-4140.
- Amanzimtoti Promenade and beach (Toti Parkrun) – Yvonne Dixie 074-190-0949.
The project co-ordinator at each start-off point will be easily identifiable in a blue Sapphire Coast Tourism T-shirt.
Bags will be supplied and collected by the municipality from identified pick-up points on the beaches and adjacent areas. It is vital that cleaners pile the bags in the correct place, or they won’t be collected. Participants must take their own gloves, rakes or spikes and drinking water.
Representatives of Amanzimtoti Primary, Kingsway High School, NG Kerk, Halfway Toyota Durban South, Scout groupings, Toti Conservancy, Clean Surf Project, Amanzimtoti Sports Centre and Sapphire Coast Tourism have confirmed their participation.
Assemble at 7.30am to start at 8am until 10am. Those who wish to continue after 10am can liaise with their respective co-ordinators. After cleaning Twini Beach stretch, Clean Surf Project will head on to Cuttings Beach, the stretch straddling Merebank and Isipingo. All participants are welcome to join.
The international clean-up month of September marks a time to re-instill pride in one’s area by cleaning and clearing away not only litter, but overgrowth, building rubble, branches and all else that detracts from the natural beauty of a place.
