RECIPE: Indulge in scrumptious Vetkoek (Amagwinya)

Vetkoek or Amagwinya (Zulu name) is a delightful, typically South African snack. A traditional pastry both in Afrikaans and Zulu culture, it’s basically a mixture of flour, water, sugar and salt which is made into small balls and deep-fried until golden brown. 

Ingredients 

 

Directions  

  1. In a large bowl, sieve the flour, sugar and salt. Add yeast
  2. Melt the magarine in lukewarm water and add to the flour mix
  3. Mix well for 20 minutes using your hands
  4. Cover the mixture with a tablecloth for 1 hour
  5. Divide the dough into balls
  6. In a medium heat saucepan add 1 cup of oil and heat it
  7. Add the dough ball in the oil, fry until golden brown.
  8. Serve with mince or chakalaka or polony
